‘Sex is not spoken about – it’s even harder to discuss fertility’

A midwife has told ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 5 Live that fertility issues need to be talked about more within BAME communities.

Figures from the fertility watchdog, the HFEA, show lower numbers of donors from BAME communities than White ones, meaning couples are less likely to find the right egg or sperm donors if required.

Because of that, the UK’s largest egg and sperm bank has told 5 Live it’s urgently looking for people from Black and Asian backgrounds to consider becoming donors.

Speaking to Emma Barnett, midwife Fatimah Mohamied said there are a lot of issues attached to infertility, including masculinity, femininity and class, which all need to be addressed.
