30 years since Liberia's civil war

Over a quarter of a million people lost their lives

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the beginning of the 14-year civil war, which claimed the lives of almost a quarter of a million people.

Former president Charles Taylor was a rebel leader at the time and had launched an insurrection from neighbouring Ivory Coast in a bid to overthrow Samuel Doe who was later killed by rival rebel leader - Yormie Johnson.

In Ghana, thousands of displaced people remain in dire need of help after weeks of torrential rains wreaked havoc in north-eastern part of the country in October.
