How can theatre help tackle teenage pregnancy in Tanzania?
In Tanzania, teen pregnancy is a very big problem among adolescent girls. According to the government data, the number of pregnancies in girls aged between 15 and 19 continues to rise. Two years ago, the authorities introduced a ban on pregnant girls and teenage mothers attending schools, as a harsh measure to curb teen pregnancy, which international rights groups called discriminatory. Irene Bitumbe is trying to tackle the issue of teen pregnancies with an interactive theatre project. She has so far worked with 15,000 people over the past two years. She told Newsday why she chose theatre as a method to reduce teen pregnancy in Tanzania.
