Abdul and Helena - Becoming British
Helena and Abdul met at a Spanish class in Hackney in 1989 – Helena had just moved to London from Birmingham and was flat-sharing, Abdul had just been granted asylum from the war in Somalia. A friendship was struck that has remained – Abdul says he learnt about Britishness from Helena. The two have had many adventures over the years and get on well with each other’s partners, and Abdul enjoys spending time with Helena’s children. They came together on the listening project to discuss a friendship that some see as unusual.
