'The day my son was killed by a terrorist'
Dave Merritt tells the story of how he discovered how his 25-year-old son Jack had been stabbed to death by Usman Khan at Fishmongers' Hall in London.
The day started like any other. Dave Merritt and his son Jack had breakfast at their home in Cambridge before they both headed off to work. Jack went to a conference at Fishmongers' Hall at the Northern end of London Bridge. He'd helped to organise the event which was to celebrate the fifth anniversary of a programme called Learning Together - a scheme to help prisoners re-integrate into society. The event was attended by Usman Khan. At lunchtime Khan, wearing a fake suicide vest, launched a violent knife attack - injuring three people and killing Cambridge University graduates Jack and 23-year-old Saskia Jones from Stratford-upon-Avon. Khan, who had participated in two de-radicalisation programmes before being released from prison 11 months before, was shot dead by police on London Bridge. Here, Jack Merritt's father Dave tells reporter Adrian Goldberg how he and his family were eventually told Jack had been murdered. He relives 'the worst journey of his life' as he and his wife headed to London to find out what had happened to their son and how later they had to break the dreadful news to Jack's younger brother.
