How Hong Kong has protected its elderly from coronavirus
Hong Kong has not recorded a single death or even infection from coronavirus in a care home. So how is this possible when, in many countries, care home deaths account for a huge proportion of the fatalities recorded? In Canada, for example, 80% of those who've died were living in a care home.
Professor Terry Lum is Head of the Department of Social Work and Social Administration at the University of Hong Kong. He says it's all thanks to strict measures put in place after Sars outbreak and a quick reaction to this current outbreak.
"The most important step is to stop the transmission from hospital to nursing home... Nursing homes typically have three-months supply of PPE."
