Around the world precautions against the coronavirus are in place and wearing a mask is often required or at least encouraged by authorities to help prevent the spread of the virus. But what may not be initially obvious is how the use of face masks impacts on those who are deaf or hard of hearing, and who rely on facial expressions and lip-reading to communicate. Peter Cook is the chair of the Department of American Sign Language at Columbia College in Chicago. Newsday spoke to him by video call with the help of his interpreter Candace Hart Hathaway.
