Airlock: A Graphic Novel
Three graphic novels combining storytelling with animation and drawn environments.
Airlock is made up of three short graphic novels. Each uses the video and audio conferencing platforms currently familiar to many of us.
Airlock brings live performers into three interactive worlds that combine storytelling with animation and drawn environments. The starting point is to respond to the experience of isolation and the sense of despair that arises out of solitude and separation, but also to consider how feelings of hope and collaboration might also be engendered by this new collective experience.
The three stories each responds to this situation. The Cosmonaut finds solace in the idea that separation can be conquered by ingenuity and daring. Writer鈥檚 Block playfully explores the solitude of authorship and how characters created by the imagination can have a life of their own. The Only Ones takes on the isolation of the sole survivor, the idea of the last person standing, and contemplates new beginnings arising from the ashes of humanity.
Each story deliberately draws on the language of the graphic novel to produce a new performance genre specially created for this era of social distancing. Each is constructed by performers acting from their homes.
