Why is Zimbabwe delaying schools reopening?

As in many countries around the world, education for Zimbabwe's estimated 5 million students is currently on hold.

Schools were supposed to reopen on Tuesday, but the government has decided to delay this after teachers unions protested that schools did not have appropriate safety measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

One of the union leaders is Mr Obert Masaraure, President of the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe, which has 35,000 members. He has a plan for 'off-line remote learning' for students while schools are closed.

Mr Masaraure is currently in hiding from Zimbabwe's state security services who have been trying to arrest him because of his union activities - which illustrates the ongoing tension between educators and the state.

Newsday's Clare McDonnell began by asking Mr Masaraure about his plan for offline learning.
