US PROTESTS
We start this podcast with a debate raging in the US: Are the federal agents sent by President Trump to the city of Portland a quasi secret police force targeting legitimate demonstrators, or are they the only law enforcement professionals capable of ending out-of-control unrest. The answer may well depend on your political viewpoint. Certainly the US government's top lawyer - Attorney General William Barr - was robust in defending the policy when questioned about it by the Democrat led House Judiciary Committee. Mr Barr was also asked why he had intervened in several high-profile criminal cases involving people close to the President. Texas Representative Syliva Garcia asked him about the decision to grant early release to Mr Trump's former campaign manager Paul Manafort because of Covid-19.Our north America correspondent Anthony Zurcher watched the Attorney General giving evidence - I asked him first about that decision to send federal government agents into Portland to tackle the protests.
