Covid-19: Has India undercounted the number of cases and deaths?
A lack of investment in its health system and a highly mobile population have contributed to cases being missed but India also has the capacity for mass testing.
India has registered nearly 60,000 Covid-19 deaths and over three million cases - amoung the highest coronavirus figures globally. The country is one of vast inequalities - many people don't have access to decent healthcare but there are also some of the best hospitals in the world.
The death rate per million of the population is actually relatively low when compared to western countries. But are the figures reliable? A lack of investment in its health system and a highly mobile population have contributed to cases being missed but India also has the capacity for mass testing. But as India's outbreak took hold later than other countries - could more have been done to prepare?
The 大象传媒's Ritual Shah has been speaking to Ramanan Laxminarayan - Founder and Director of the Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics & Policy (CDDEP), Delhi, India. How reliable are India's Covid figures?
