Why has Fiji got a problem with 'superbugs'?
For the last six months the world has been coping with Covid but but some think 'superbugs' or antimicrobial resistance could pose a bigger threat to human health. In the Pacific island nation of Fiji the situation is particularly acute. Despite a population of less than a million people, it has one of the highest rates of bacterial infections in the world and antibiotic resistance is growing at an alarming rate. Dr. Paul De Barro is the biosecurity research director at Australia鈥檚 national science agency, the CSIRO and he鈥檚 about to start a three-year study in Fiji. So why is the rate so high there?
