Bach’s Double Concerto in D minor, also known as the ‘Bach Double’, is one of the most famous of over 1000 known works Bach composed in his lifetime.

From 1717-1723, Bach was the Director of Music for Leopold, Prince of Anhalt-Köthen, and it is possible that the Double Concerto was written for two principal violinists in Prince Leopold’s orchestra. Bach highlights the relationship between the two solo violins throughout the three-movement concerto, and typical of his own style and that of the late Baroque period, makes use of counterpoint and fugue.

This recording is from a performance which took place in Cheltenham Town Hall in 2016, with internationally renowned Baroque violinist, Rachel Podger, and ´óÏó´«Ã½ NOW Leader, Lesley Hatfield, as soloists. We hope you enjoy listening to it!
