Nagorno-Karabakh: Azeri Ambassador calls for diplomatic solution
Over the last few days there's been heavy fighting in the disputed enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh, with advancing tanks, air raid sirens in cities and reports of dozens of people killed. The disputed enclave, which most countries recognise as part of Azerbaijan, is a de facto independent state with an Armenian ethnic majority, after Azeris were expelled during a civil war in the late 1980's and 90's.
For years that conflict had been put on ice. But now it's flaring up - and the concern is that outside powers like Turkey could be pulled into the dispute, further escalating it.
The ambassador of Azerbaijan to the United Kingdom, Tahir Taghizadeh, told Newsday the international community has to help them find a long-term compromise - including a right to return for those expelled thirty years ago.
