Generating power in Nigeria
In 2019, the estimated cost of electricity in Nigeria was about $0.14 per kilowatt-hour. But distribution companies only charged customers $0.080 leading to a shortfall of $0.057 which is paid as subsidy by the government.
That year, the total electricity subsidy cost the government of Nigeria upwards of $1.5 billion
A World Bank report shows that 60% of the subsidy was used to cover electricity consumption for the richest 10% of the population. While billions of dollars are going to subsidizing the rich, the latest estimates indicate that 90 million of the poorest Nigerians have no access to power.
