COVID-19’s impact on fitness industry
Prior to lockdown, South Africa’s gyms raked in over $900 million in annual revenue, but since March the tap has run dry up as gym memberships have been put on pause.
The effect of the pandemic is being felt across many sectors of the economy, but the fitness industry has been particularly hard hit since it had virtually no economic activity since March. An independent gym company is taking the government to court in a bid to have gyms and fitness centers reopened. But in the meantime, those that work in the industry are at a standstill.
