Baby Queen – aka Durban-born multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Bella Latham – has only been on the scene for hot minute, but she has already proved herself to be an essential new voice in the pop world. Making catchy grunge-pop for Gen Z, Latham tackles everything from internet addiction and mental health, to Instagram influencers and body positivity with her clever, satirical lyrics and heady pop beats.

Growing up in Durban, Latham was introduced to soul and funk music by her parents before discovering the infectious pop worlds of Taylor Swift and Coldplay. After teaching herself guitar, Latham had written around fifty songs by the time she was fourteen, but it wasn’t until she moved to London a couple of years later that she began to sculpt her satirical Baby Queen voice.

Much like pop contemporaries Billie Eilish and Yungblud, Latham’s tracks follow traditional pop melodies and structures, but descend into something a little more grungey and scathing as she embraces the angst and disillusionment felt amongst young people today. Self-described as anti-pop, tracks like ‘Pretty Girl Lie’ and ‘Internet Religion’ give voice to her own sharp observations and cynicism about modern youth culture, whilst providing an infectious soundtrack to those directly affected.

With every new release, Baby Queen has been steadily gaining praise and exposure, culminating in her debut EP ‘Medicine’ which was released on November 13th. Filled with glistening synths, catchy guitar riffs and hazy melodies, Latham has certainly made her mark and is undoubtedly here to stay.
