Three of Hong Kong鈥檚 most high profile pro-democracy activists, Joshua Wong, Agnes Chow and Ivan Lam, have been sentenced for seven to thirteen months for organising and taking part in an unauthorised assembly near the Hong Kong Police HQ last year. Beijing has since introduced a controversial security law with harsh punishments but as their offences took place before the law's enactment, the activists have avoided a potential life sentence.

Pro-democracy activist Nathan Law, who was forced to flee last summer, gives his reactions. He explains that the sentences were harsher than they had expected and how future protests, given the risk that now comes with protesting on the street, will adopt 'a more quiet and subtle form' and how the educational system has become the new focus for protest.
