'Hand of God': Maradona and Faith
Argentina marked the death of Diego Maradona with three days of national mourning. Front pages around the world carried his image. Some headline-writers even reached for religious language to capture the moment. One read, "God is Dead". Another simply said, "Heavenly".
His fans revered him for the miracles he worked on the football pitch. Even Pope Francis is the proud owner of one of his Number 10 Shirts. Off the pitch, of course, as Maradona was the first to admit, he was no saint. And it鈥檚 this paradox that, for many, makes him such an intriguing, captivating figure.
Jimmy Burns, biographer of both Maradona and Pope Francis, spoke to Dan Tierney about the footballer鈥檚 God-like persona.
