Record breaking mountaineer attempts K2 in winter
Last year was a difficult year for mountaineers. With the Himalaya and Karakoram range almost completely shut down due to the global covid pandemic, there have been only a handful of expeditions. But that is about to change. Nirmal Purja is from one of at least three teams who plan to attempt the peak of K2 during the harshest winter months where temperatures dip to -62C and where wind speeds top 100mph.
He has previously broken all records for climbing the 14 highest peaks in the world - in less than seven months. Nirmal Purja spoke to Newsday's Clare McDonnell from base camp on the Pakistan side as he prepares to go up the mountain.
