Cost of dog ownership
Many people end up abandoning their pets once they realize the long-term financial implications. Animal lover Jessica Preyser has two dogs, a cat and interestingly also has a number of chickens running around the back yard of her Johannesburg home. While it’s not quite a Zoo, Jessica runs a tight ship to ensure all her animals are happy.
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) puts down around 500 000 domestic animals in South Africa a year. This is done at the expense of the tax payer, so the implications of pet abandonment are felt by everyone – that’s why it’s crucial for wannabe pet owners to know exactly what they are getting into.
At the SPCA Kennels in Sandton Johannesburg, these abandoned pets are looking for homes, and if they don’t find any soon they might have to be put down.
