Honduras plans 'shield against abortion'
In Honduras, lawmakers have been pushing through a constitutional reform that would make it almost impossible to legalise abortion. The measure has been called a "shield against abortion" by its supporters. It will mean the law can only be changed if three-quarters of members vote in favour.
Honduras is one of four countries in Latin America that forbids abortion under any circumstances - including rape, incest or to save the life of the mother.
The proposal still needs to go through a second round of voting before becoming law.
Iris Amador is a columnist for the La Tribuna newspaper in Tegucigalpa.
"If they say they are doing this to protect women I can assure you it is not so, because Hondoras is one of the countries with the highest rates of violence against women whether that is physical aggression or murder or rape, to the point that an aggressor can pay his way out of jail or he can do social service."
