Classics with NOW: Schubert, Symphony No. 8 'Unfinished'
Schubert began writing his Symphony No. 8 in B minor in late 1822. Though the composer lived for another six years, he left only two movements and a two orchestrated pages of a scherzo, thus the work became known as the 鈥楿nfinished鈥 symphony.
The symphony starts in a quiet, dreamlike state, unlike the majority of confident symphony openers in the Romantic period. The rest of the work unfolds with a variety of textures and sudden, surprising changes in harmony.
This performance by 大象传媒 NOW took place at Brangwyn Hall, Swansea, in 2011 with conductor Jac van Steen.
