Suez Canal: Why is the Ever Given so hard to move?
The Ever Given is the length of four football pitches and is lying across the southern end of the canal preventing other ships from getting through one of the world's busiest waterways. All attempts to move the mega-ship have failed so far and there is no clear indication of when the canal can be unblocked. Guy Platten, secretary general of the International Chamber of Shipping, explains the complex logistics involved, and how it may result in the weight of the ship being reduced by the removal of containers, and even the fuel.
