The WW1 experiences of a Senegalese soldier
The French author David Diop explains how his great grandfather's silence about his experiences in World War One made him want to find out more about the horrors of the trenches. His book tells the untold story of the experiences of African soldiers sent over the top to die for France. Anna Moschovakis explains the challenge of translating a book that, although written in French, mimics the rhythms of the Wolof language of Senegal.
