The government has advised people not to travel into and out of areas hardest hit by the Indian variant of Covid-19 unless necessary.
Health officials said it was spreading fastest in Bolton, Blackburn, Kirklees, Bedford, Burnley, Leicester, Hounslow and North Tyneside.
A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said: 鈥淲orking with local authorities,聽we took聽swift and decisive action聽to聽slow the spread of the B1.617.2 variant聽by introducing surge testing and bringing forward second doses of the vaccine for the most vulnerable.
"We provided additional guidance for those living in affected areas when we became aware of the risk posed by the variant, to encourage people to take an extra cautious approach when meeting others or travelling.鈥澛
