Tiananmen Square: Tough online restrictions make it harder to commemorate

For the second year running, authorities in Hong Kong have banned an annual vigil for anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre. They cite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic for the restrictions. There are also restrictions on marking the event online.

Kerry Allen, China media analyst, describes how commemorating the massacre in the digital as well as the physical world is getting harder, with many search terms and even emojis of birthday cakes being censored, and how people are getting round the restrictions.

"It's increasingly hard to get round the restrictions - people, instead of candles, are posting pictures of their light switches with the numbers, '6', '4', on top of them."
