Apple Daily raid: "Freedom of the press not a licence to incite violence"
The Hong Kong newspaper Apple Daily is known for its bold criticism of the mainland Chinese leadership. On 17 June, the offices of the newspaper were raided by police officers, alleging its reports breached a national security law.
Victor Gao, a former Chinese diplomat and Vice President of the Center for China and Globalization, explains why the raid on Apple Daily does not constitute an attack on the freedom of the press, but that the national security law must be respected as a means to maintain the stability of of Hong Kong.
"Stability and predictability are based on rule of law which is essential for the continued success of Hong Kong as a place to do business and as an international hub."
