Apple Daily: Hong Kong's pro-democracy paper set to close
Hong Kong's largest pro-democracy paper Apple Daily has announced its closure, in a blow to media freedom in the city. The closure comes after sustained pressure on the paper from the authorities: police raided its offices last week, their financial assets have been frozen and its owner, the media tycoon Jimmy Lai, is in prison. Other senior executives have been arrested, accused of violating the national security law that Beijing has imposed on Hong Kong. It is understood that the final edition will be printed on Thursday, with a larger print run than usual.
Tom Grundy, Editor-in-Chief of digital news outlet Hong Kong Free Press, explains what this means for the media landscape of the region and the "chilling effect' the authorities' failure to say exacty how the Apple Daily has breached the national security law will have on journalism.
