Home found for model of medieval Coventry made during lockdown
Peter Garbett, a passionate Coventrian created a model of old Coventry during lockdown and wanted a place in the city for it to be displayed.
Peter Garbett a passionate Coventrian is fascinated by Coventry's medieval past and created a model of the city's former city walls during lockdown. After finding a map from 1509 he decided to add the street layout as it was then including model houses, Coventry's cathedrals and churches and other notable buildings. In 1509 Coventry had all its walls, gates, churches and hospitals which includes Fords Hospital built in 1509.
The model took 11 months to build and due it being a popular attraction whilst displayed in Coventry's Central Library, a search was on to find a more permanent home for it. Coventry City Council have stepped and will house the model in their Friargate building until the end of the UK City of Culture year.
Cllr Jim O鈥橞oyle cabinet member for jobs, regeneration and climate change said, 鈥淚鈥檓 really pleased that we have been able to find a home for this model of mediaeval Coventry for our year as City of Culture. I know Peter has spent hours on it and I know it has been a labour of love so it鈥檚 great that it will be on display for more people, including visitors to the city arriving by train, to see.鈥
