Women's hockey medal match: Netherlands v Argentina

The 2016 runners up take on the 2012 runners up in the final of the women's hockey at the Oi stadium.

The runners up from Rio 2016, the Netherlands, were looking to avenge their defeat against Great Britain five years ago as they faced Argentina in the women鈥檚 hockey gold medal match.

The European side go into the match as favourites and overcame GB in the semi-finals, in a repeat of that agonising final. Argentina are ranked three in the world and overcame India in the semi-finals on their way to the final.

The Oi hockey stadium has been the hoist of a brilliant competition, which has seen the Indian men win their first medal in 41 years, a repeat of the 2016 final between GB women and the Netherlands in the semi-final, and a fair share of shootouts.

This will be the 14th meeting between the two sides, with Argentina managing to win on just four of those occasions. The Netherlands finished their group unbeaten but in second place while the Argentinian women finished third in their group.

The Netherlands last won gold in 2012, beating Argentina in the final in London, while Argentina have picked up a medal in every games except Rio since 2000. Should the score be level at full time, the teams will take part in a shootout, where players will have eight seconds to score against the goal keeper, starting at a distance of 23 metres.
