GB medal hopes in the athletics and kayak as the men's skateboarding and men's basketball semi-finals continue.
Scheduling gets underway with the men's marathon swimming. The women's event yesterday provided a great spectacle of tactical racing and it's hoped the men's will be no different. German Florian Wellbrock is known as the athlete with the best sprint finish, and he'll no doubt be in medal contention should he be near front towards the end. One challenger may well be Gregorio Paltrinieri of Italy, but he has recently overcome a bout of glandular fever so his ability to continually perform is uncertain.
After a very successful women's park event yesterday, the men's competition gets underway in the skateboarding. The heats get underway at the Ariake Sports Park before the final at 04:30 BST. Look out for the exciting Australian, Keegan Palmer, and Brazillian Pedro Barros, who'll be looking to secure the first ever men's Olympic gold in this event.
Briton Liam Heath goes in his kayak semi-final. The defending Olympic champion will be looking to see of his competitors and retain his title, but he faces stiff opposition from a field who are closer than ever in the event. The medal event later in the schedule will no doubt be close.
The morning athletics session sees the discuss, long jump and shot put continue in the field. Britain's 4x100m medal bid get's underway as Dina Asher-Smith returns to competitive action after pulling out of the 200m. The British quartet will be aiming to breeze through to the final but they face tough competition from both the US and Jamaica in their heat. The men's 100m hurdles final will see GB's Andrew Pozzi and Jamaica's Hansle Parchment look to chase down the outright favourite Grant Holloway of the US.
The semi-finals and finals of the women's 10m platform diving event take place today with Britons Andrea Spendolini Sirieix and Lois Toulson potentially reaching the final. The Chinese duo of Hongchan Quan and Yuxi Chen will be clear favorites for the gold medal spot, and will be pushing the 400 point barrier.
The men's basketball semi-finals are hotting up as the world number one and two sides, the US and Australia respectively, compete for a shot at gold. The US are favourites for the title and have a strong history in the Olympics. Winners of this semi-final will play France or Slovenia, the former of which shocked the American side in the pool stages.
The track cycling continues with the men's omnium, where Britain's Matt Wells is going for gold. Consisting of the points race, elimination race, tempo race and the scratch race, the omnium has been condensed into a single session of cycling at the Olympics. Jan-Willem van Schip will pose a serious medal threat to the Brit. Elsewhere, the men's spring continues with Kenny and Carlin go for GB, and the women's Keirin continues with GB's Katy Marchant in action.
The athletics sees medals given in the women's pole vault, men's 400m, the women's heptathlon and the men's decathlon, plus the 4x400m women's relay heats and men's 1,500m semi-finals. GB's Holly Bradshaw is looking to secure her nations first ever medal in the pole vault. The Brit finished sixth at London 2012 and fifth in Rio 2016 but will be looking to better that performance in what will be a close final. GB's women are looking to progress through the heats of the 4x400m heats. The Brits are up against the might of the US and Jamaica but with the first three in each heat qualifying for the final, they have a good chance of progressing. Emily Diamond, Zoey Clark, Laviai Nielsen and Nicole Yeargin were looking to run as close to sub 51 seconds per leg as possible to guarantee an automatic qualification spot. The men are in the closing stages of the decathlon competition with the conclusion of the javelin, as well as the final event in the 1,500m. World number one Damian Warner is leading coming into the final session and he is looking to break the magical 9,000 point mark, and smash the Olympic record. GB's Jake Wightman is looking to make the final of the men's 1,500m alongside fellow countrymen Josh Kerr and Jake Heyward. Favourite, Abel Kipsang of Kenya, will no doubt go out looking to cement his intentions in his semi-final but the Brits will be well in the mix across the two semi-finals. The top five from each race, plus the next two fastest times, qualify for Saturday's final. There is a gold medal to be had in the men's 400m final. Kirani James breezed Katarina Johnson-Thompson was out of the heptathlon leaving favourite Nafissatou Thiam in pole position to take the gold. The medals would be awarded in this session as the athletes conclude their competition with the 800m. Hot on Thiam's heels are fellow countrywoman Noor Vidts and Dutch duo Anouk Vetter and Emma Oosterwegel. There are a trio of American competitors looking to break into the top ten, too.
