India monsoon: Death toll rises as floods hit Maharashtra
The states of Goa and Maharashtra have been badly affected, with many feared missing near the financial hub Mumbai after torrential rains caused floods across the region. Tens of thousands of people have been moved out of affected areas, with record-breaking rainfall reported along parts of the coast. The death toll from heavy monsoon rains climbed to at least 130 with nearly 90,000 people evacuated, while rescuers desperately search for survivors.聽
Roxy Koll from the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology says that extreme rainfall events and cyclones are now happening more frequently and intensely, owing in part to the Arabian Sea warming as part of the impact of climate change.
