Coventry鈥檚 War Memorial was created in the city in July 1921 to servicemen killed in the First World War. A few years after opening the park, Coventry City Council created a scheme where citizens could plant a tree in memory of their loved ones with a commemorative plaque. Many of these plaques went missing or got broken over the years. There are now a total of 678 memorial trees in the park, remembering those who鈥檝e died in subsequent conflicts. The trees have been catalogued and are being given new plaques as part of a project via the Friends of War Memorial Park, Coventry.

For two years volunteers have been surveying the trees, researching the stories behind the people they鈥檙e dedicated to, and finding ways to restore and replace trees and plaques. Volunteers would like families of the fallen to come forward so they can learn and share more of the stories of the people behind the trees.

Two of the people involved with the project are Gill Mills and Bob Bristow.
