Featured Artist: Dexter

Get to know bedroom pop/R&B artist Dexter as our Featured Artist.

Dexter may be young but she certainly packs a punch with her smooth grooves and intelligent lyricism. Self-described as a bedroom pop artist with an R&B tinge, she has a genre-bending sound that blends jazzy basslines and hip-hop inspired drum beats with woozy melodies and heady vocals. At a time when DIY artists are dominating the scene, Dexter is certainly capable of holding her own.

Having started out uploading songs onto Soundcloud, it was during lockdown that the Vauxhall native began to take writing more seriously. Despite the steadily growing support for the tracks she released throughout 2020, Dexter worked anonymously. It wasn’t until a new MacBook arrived at her family home that she was forced to tell her mum about her music.

Following the success of her singles ‘Same Way’ and ‘Maybe The Problem Is Me’, which together amassed more than a million streams at the start of 2021, she has come back with a fuller and more mature sound on recent singles ‘Blue Skies’ and ‘I Like Me’. Though they still have the intimacy of her earlier guitar-based tunes, it is clear that she has pushed herself and developed a clearer sound. Her forthcoming EP is expected in August, and if the songs we’ve heard so far are anything to go off, this isn’t an artist you want to sleep on.
