The United States, Britain and Australia have warned of a high risk of a terror attack at Kabul airport and advised their nationals not to travel there. People waiting outside the airport have been advised to leave the area immediately.
More than 82,000 people have been airlifted from Kabul, which fell to the Taliban 10 days ago.
David S Sedney is former president of the American University of Afghanistan and former deputy assistant secretary of defence for Afghanistan, Pakistan and Central Asia. He told Newsday:
鈥淪uch a warning would only be issued if the quality of the intelligence was quite high, so it is a serious threat. Isis-K has carried out a number of attacks in Afghanistan, they have often targeted Hazara shias in Kabul.鈥
鈥淭here have been complexities, inconsistencies and outright falsehoods on the part of the United States during this time. This is a confusing message that they are sending. There will still be many many American citizens and many more who helped America who will not be able to leave Afghanistan by August 31.鈥
