Nakato explores the complexity of domestic violence and a young woman’s desire to escape, despite all the societal barriers against her. The film’s narrative unfolds via secret meetings with her social worker.

Ritah, being far from home, speaks to her family via video calls, but is unable to tell them the issues she is facing. She struggles to admit to herself what has happened to the loving relationship she once had.

Her only shelter and outlet are regular check ins with her support worker, Tess. Everything escalates when Elijah comes home and finds Ritah reminiscing in the bedroom, visibly homesick. She runs and locks herself in the bathroom and calls Tess for help. But as Elijah gets inside, the call ends.

Ritah realises that she isn't safe in her own home and has no support network to turn to. She must decide what she wants to do: stay with her abusive husband, or leave and face the societal barriers that await her in an unfamiliar country.
