Can the Iran nuclear deal be revived?
Talks on reviving the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, the JCPOA, are due to resume in Vienna on Monday. President Biden is trying to revive the deal, under which Iran agreed to limit its nuclear programme in return for relief from US, UN and EU sanctions. But Mr Biden's predecessor Donald Trump, abandoned the deal in 2018 and under a policy of maximum pressure imposed ever more punitive sanctions. Iran for its part began violating its nuclear limits. The United States and Iran will be holding indirect talks on Monday 29th of November and the other signatories of the deal, Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia will be shuttling between the two sides. Rob Malley will be there. He is the US special envoy for Iran and was also a negotiator on the 2015 JCPOA. Why is it proving so difficult to revive?
