USA Gymnastics agrees $380m settlement with abuse survivors
Former US gymnastics team doctor, Larry Nassar, was imprisoned for 300 years for molesting hundreds of young girls in his care
Hundreds of women abused by former US national gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar are to receive $380 million (拢287 million) after reaching a settlement with USA Gymnastics.
Nassar was sentenced to over 300 years in jail in 2018 for molesting young gymnasts.
The settlement ends a five-year legal battle, which started after Rachael Denhollander waived her anonymity to publicly accuse Nasser of abusing her. This led to a flood of claims by hundreds of other affected women. The judge presiding over the court case said she was "the bravest person I have ever had in my courtroom."
We called her to get her reaction to the settlement.
"I'm grateful there is some sort of justice for the survivors... but it shouldn't take more than 500 survivors and five years of pressure and intensive reporting to get to some measure of justice... The significant sexual abuse scandals that have been uncovered have all been uncovered by journalists and by survivors willing to go forward and relinquishing that anonymity."
