Covid-19: With ‘tsunami’ of cases is it time to revise rules?
European countries have reported record coronavirus infections, as the World Health Organization warned that a combination of the Omicron and Delta variants was leading to “a tsunami” of cases.
The French health minister, Olivier Veran, described the rise in infections there as “dizzying” with 208,000 cases reported in the past 24 hours. The UK, Italy and Spain are among the countries where cases are breaking records.
However some are questioning whether it is time to revise how we deal with the virus and the measures that are being used to control the pandemic. Among them, Professor Francois Balloux, Director of the University College London’s Genetics Institute. He believes that the zero-Covid strategy is no longer valid.
