Bronx fire: At least 19 dead and more than 60 injured as blaze tears through apartment
The majority of victims were suffered from severe smoke inhalation, New York City Fire Department commissioner Daniel Nigro said.
New York's deadliest fire in 30 years has killed at least 19 people, 9 of which were children. Officials believe that the fire was sparked by a malfunctioning electric heater.
Owners of the building LIHC Investment Group and Belveron Partners and they said: 鈥淲e are devastated by the unimaginable loss of life caused by this profound tragedy... We are cooperating fully with the Fire Department and other city agencies as they investigate its cause, and we are doing all we can to assist our residents.鈥
Newsday spoke with Emma Seiwell, a reporter for the New York Daily News about what she saw when she was there:
"When I got there, there's still people being evacuated out of the building. I saw a lot of terrible things... I saw women carrying out children crying, just people trying to find each other - I've never seen anything like this".
