The all-female garage mechanics driving change in northern Nigeria
An initiative to develop female garage mechanics in the northerly Nigerian state of Sokoto is doing very well after it was launched in 2019.
Some 25 apprentices aged 18 and over are nearing the end of their training and will operate the first all-female garage in Sokoto.
The project aims to provide jobs for women in an industry dominated by men and challenge traditional gender roles in this conservative and highly insecure region of the country.
Fatima Adamu is founder of the non-profit organisation Nana: Girls and Women Empowerment Initiative. She says: 鈥淭he problem is how to convince their parents and brothers that this is the right profession for them.鈥
