Coastguards mark 200 years of saving lives at sea
Coastguards around the UK have been marking 200 years of the service that saves lives along the coast and at sea.
Members of the service gathered to cast throwlines, used in rescues, into the waters where they operate - as a symbol of the service's dedication.
Her Majesty's Coastguard, now part of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), was founded on 15 January 1822.
The MCA says it calls on 310 coastguard rescue teams and 10 search and rescue helicopter bases to coordinate responses to emergency situations around the coast.
