No sprint winner has gone to claim the men’s pursuit title since the legendary Ole Einar Bjorndalen in 2002. Pursuit gold in 2018 was won by France’s Martin Fourcade, who has since retired. Another Frenchman, Quentin Fillon Maillet, has shown an aptitude for chasing down opponents this season, with four of his five World Cup victories coming in the pursuit discipline (leaving him top of the overall standings) and he will be aiming to erase a 25.5-second deficit and overhaul Saturday’s pursuit winner Johannes Thingnes Bo. The Norwegian hadn’t quite been at his brilliant best coming into Beijing but has produced when it matters most, claiming three medals so far – two gold and one bronze.
