How focusing on pleasure can lead to safer sex

Teaching people about achieving sexual pleasure can help sell safe-sex messages, say researchers from the World Health Organization. Condom use is improved by programmes using this approach, more than by others that focus only on the dangers of unprotected sex, the study has found. It says enjoyment - rather than fear - is a healthy motivator.

大象传媒 health correspondent Michelle Roberts says that previous programmes focused on fear about unwanted pregnancy and infections, but also focusing on "pleasure, joy and responsibility" led to a wider uptake of condoms. This is good news for attempts to curb the number of sexually transmitted infections. But researchers say more work needs to be done to improve access to contraception and safe-sex devices.
