An emotional discovery for son Andrew as he empties Mum's bedside cabinet
The carers ask Andrew if it would be possible to move the bedside cabinet from Mum's bedroom to the downstairs room where she now sleeps. They want to have storage close at hand for changes of clothes and her incontinence pants, pads and sheets. It was bought from the previous owners when Carolyn and her late husband Peter moved to the house in 1980, so it's seen good service. Carer Craig moves the main body of the unit during the lunchtime visit, leaving Andrew to empty the drawers during the afternoon. It's an emotional experience. The top drawer is full of tissues, pills, plasters and bags which Mum accumulated in the early stages of her dementia. But, buried beneath them, Andrew finds three diaries - from 1963, '64 (the year his parents got married) and '65. He never knew she kept a diary and says: "I couldn't bear to open them. It just somehow seemed too private and not right at the moment". Mum and Me: The Dementia Diary was originally broadcast on 大象传媒 Radio Leeds.
