THE POLITICS OF SUBSIDIES
Many African governments have spelt out subsidies as a key part of their solutions to underperforming economies and non-competitive industries. The current fuel crisis in Kenya has been blamed in part on the government鈥檚 failed subsidy program occasioned delayed payments of fuel stabilization fund to oil marketers as well as hoarding by some operators. The cost of living has become a major election issue in Kenya as political formations grapple with what is the best economic model to get Kenyans out of poverty.
Kenya Connects interrogates the inefficiencies in government subsidy programs and how they affect key sectors of the economy.
