US shortage: The dangers of homemade baby formula

A shortage of baby formula in the US is linked to supply chain challenges and the closure of a major factory in February after a recall linked to bacteria. This has led desperate parents who are unable to get hold of baby formula to turn to the internet for recipes and try to make formula themselves.

Dr Jessica Madden, a medical doctor who runs a private newborn medicine practice in Ohio and a Fellow of the American Academy of Paediatrics, explains the dangers. She says there's a risk of babies not getting the right balance of components, such as electrolytes, calcium or sodium. She also notes that some of the recipes are so complex that dangerous mistakes could be made.
