Lachi: The visually impaired musician changing disability culture
Lachi, a visually impaired musician, wasn't as upfront about her disability when her career was just taking off. Now she advocates for inclusion of disabled artists.
Award winning Nigerian-American electronic dance star Lachi is a visually impaired musician who campaigns for the inclusion of disabled artists in the industry with seven albums and millions of streams to her name. However Lachi wasn鈥檛 as upfront about her disability when her career was just taking off. She鈥檚 collaborated with some of the biggest names, including US hip hop artist Snoop Dog and DJ and music producer Markus Schulz.
Despite numerous hurdles, inaccessibility and lack of representation in the industry, disabled musicians like Lachi are making their and others鈥 voices heard. This year, Lachi launched RAMPD (Recording Artists and Music Professionals with Disabilities) which brings together disabled music professionals, saying "RAMPD aims to amplify disability culture." She goes on to say, "Change is when the folks who want change are the folks writing the cheques鈥 Getting more folks with disabilities not only on the stage, but in decision-making positions.鈥
