My friend Bruno Pereira: A tireless fighter for Amazonian tribes

A friend remembers Pereira as a tireless campaigner for the rights of uncontacted tribes and his work to help protect them from the threats of poachers, loggers and traffickers.

Brazilian police say a suspect has confessed to burying the bodies of missing British journalist Dom Phillips and indigenous expert Bruno Pereira. Detective Eduardo Fontes said the man, Amarildo da Costa de Oliveira, took investigators to a site where human remains were dug up. He said police would work with Interpol to confirm the bodies' identities.

Sarah Shenker is an indigenous rights expert at Survival International - a global charity that campaigns for the rights of indigenous people around the world. She has worked with Bruno Pereira for many years, and remembers him as a tireless campaigner and fighter for the rights of uncontacted tribes from the threats of poachers, miners, drug traffickers and illegal loggers in the western Amazon. She also remembers him an influential collaborator who brought tribes to the media's attention in a bid to hold the Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro to account.
